In Latin meaning of word cataract is waterfall.
Natural lens is clear and transparent , it refracts (Focuses ) light rays, so as to form point (Clear, sharp )image of an object on the retina.
When clear transparent lens in the eye becomes cloudy or milky like a waterfall , this condition is known as cataract .
Lens proteins get coagulated (become cloudy and insoluble) due to ageing /Diabetes/Trauma , thus loose its transparency and becomes cloudy or opaque to form cataract . Cloudy lens hampers transmission of light, thus cataract patients see blurred foggy images with reduced colour and contrast sensitivity.
Phacoemulsification:
During phacoemulsification, a surgeon makes a small incision at the edge of the cornea and then creates an opening in the membrane that surrounds the lens. A small ultrasonic probe is then inserted, breaking up the cloudy lens into tiny fragments. The fragments are then suctioned out of the capsule by an attachment on the probe tip.
After the lens particles are removed, an intra ocular lens implant, commonly referred to as an IOL, is implanted and positioned into the lenses natural capsule. It is inserted through the injector which is a pen like instrument that injects the folded IOL into the capsular bag. Once the lens is pushed through, it unfolds and is positioned in place.
Phacoemulsification is typically performed in an outpatient day care surgery centre and normally does not require a hospital stay. The cataract surgery procedure is usually performed under topical anaesthesia (numbing drops inserted into the eye) within 2-3 hours you can go home on the same day.
Phacoemusification is a painless, safe procedure that gives Highly accurate results with precision.
