Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry eye disease is a common condition that occurs when your tears aren't able to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes.
Symptoms :
- A stinging, burning or scratchy sensation in your eyes
- Stringy mucus in or around your eyes
- Eye redness
- Foreign body sensation in the eye
- Difficulty with nighttime driving
- Watery eyes, which is the body's response to the irritation of dry eyes
- Blurred vision or eye fatigue
Causes :
Decreased tear production in the eye
- Aging
- Autoimmune disorders such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, lupus, thyroid disorder
- Medicines such as antihistaminics
Increased evaporation of the tear film
- Meibomian gland dysfunction, posterior blepharitis
- Reduced blinking rate such as reading, driving, working on computer
- Eyelid problems such as ectropion
- Wind, smoke, dry air
- Vit A deficiency
Risk Factors :
- Age >50 years
- Diet low in Vit A, Omega 3 fatty acids
- Wearing contact lens
Prevention :
- Lubricants
- Take breaks while working for long time on computer
- Blink frequently
- Drink ample water
- Avoid sitting straight in front of AC blower
- Stop smoking, avoid smoke
